– Pistons Legend Rick Mahorn Makes First Stop at The Charles H. Wright Museum –
Auburn Hills, Mich. – Feb. 01, 2008 – Education, pride and heritage are the themes of the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Shock and Rock Financial “Third Annual Know Your Black History Tour”, which launched at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. To add to the excitement, Fathead.com has come on board as an in-kind sponsor.
The month-long tour gives high school students an opportunity to express what “black history” means to them via poetic, artistic or literary expression, and the chance to win a $1,000 college scholarship. Fathead.com will also be donating a Detroit Pistons wall graphic to each of the winners.
“It is very important for kids to know their history,” said WNBA Detroit Shock Assistant Coach and Pistons legend, Rick Mahorn. “Last year’s tour engaged students to learn, and also provided a solid opportunity for the future of those who won scholarship money.” Mahorn will be joined by distinguished personalities from the Shock, Rock Financial and Fathead.com. Also, members of the Tuskegee Airmen, WJLB’s Dr. Darrius, Sweet Georgia Brown Co-owner Kevin Ransom and My TV20’s Sharon McClendon will join the tour.
“Rock Financial is thrilled to partner with the Detroit Pistons a third straight year on this important event that celebrates black history and fosters diversity and understanding,” said Rock Financial President Patrick McInnis. “We are committed to embracing diversity and supporting educational opportunities for area youth.”
The tour will make four stops throughout the month of February and a winner will be selected at each stop. The winning student receives a $1,000 scholarship for higher education from Rock Financial, along with the Pistons logo graphic from Fathead. Runners-up receive a $100 Visa check courtesy of Rock Financial and the Pistons-Palace Foundation. Tour stops include: Feb. 11 at the Flint Boys & Girls Club, Feb. 14 at Romulus High School and Feb. 18 at Avondale High School.
High school students not attending tour-stop schools can apply for a $1,000 scholarship online at www.pistons.com or www.rockfinancial.com beginning Feb. 1, 2008. Pistons media partner, My TV20, promotes the statewide online competition via television spots and their Web site, www.tv20detroit.com. All scholarship winners will be honored during a halftime on-court presentation at the Feb. 22 Pistons game.
“It’s an honor for the Fathead team to help recognize the incredible achievements of African Americans during this month-long celebration,” said Brian Stevenson of Fathead. “This tour helps educate dynamic young people on their proud heritage and history.”
